Worthwhile Places is a fascinating inside look at the history of some of our most treasured national parks. The book illuminates a remarkable public-private partnership that helped to shape our national park system. The close association and warm and lasting friendship between John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and Horace M. Albright is documented through 211 letters covering a 36-year period. The letters portray a common concern for and love of our nations natural heritage and efforts which preserved countless scenic wonders for future generations. Horace Albright joined the National Park Service at its inception in 1916. He was superintendent of Yellowstone National Park and later director of the National Park Service. After he left government service, he remained active in the conservation movement until his death in 1987. John D. Rockefeller, Jr., a generous supporter of the national park system and other conservation and preservation activities, was one of the earliest proponents of private sector cooperation with the national governments preservation efforts. The letters provide insights into the plannings and problem solving which led to the creation of Acadia, Grand Teton, Grand Smoky Mountains, and Virgin Islands national parks as well as other conservation/preservation efforts for the California Big Trees, Floridas Bald Cypress Swamp, and Colonial Williamsburg. Dr. Joseph Ernsts Overview and Elilogue place the letters in their historical perspective and provide glimpses into the lives of John D. Rockefeller, Jr. and Horace M. Albright. This selection of letters highlights the sweep of their vision for Americas outdoors, which literally stretched from coast to coast.

PREFACE
John D. Rockefeller, Jr., a skilled and prolific letter writer, had wide and varied interests. With personal access to the nation's leaders, he corresponded with politicians, religious leaders, educators, landscape architects, and conservationists such as Horace M. Albright, Superintendent of Yellowstone National Park and later Director of the National Park Service.
His correspondence with Albright documents one of his most personal and long-standing interests - the national parks. The letters illustrate a remarkable public-private partnership that helped shape the growing park system. They portray a common concern and love of our natural heritage and the efforts which preserved countless scenic wonders for future generations.
The letters also reveal a highly personal relationship. While Rockefeller was always Mr. Rockefeller and Albright was always Mr. Albright, they both shared their feelings and ideas without reserve. The letters have three themes: the creation of more and better national parks, Rockefeller's concept of an ideal park, and the maturing of a warm and lasting friendship based on deeply shared mutual interests.
Between 1924 and 1960, Rockefeller and Albright exchanged over 1,300 letters. Rockefeller wrote from his offices in New York City, his homes in Maine and Williamsburg, Virginia, and occasionally while vacationing in Europe and Tucson, Arizona. Albright's letters came from Yellowstone

National Park, Washington, D. C., and, after he left the Park Service, his office in New York City.
Of these letters, 211, arranged in chronological order, are included in this collection. Rockefeller's copies of the correspondence are preserved in the Rockefeller Archive Center in Pocantico Hills, North Tarrytown, New York. The material is filed by subject matter at the Center. There are handwritten memos by Rockefeller, carbons of the letters he sent to Albright, and the originals of Albright's letters to Rockefeller with penciled comments and considered replies by Rockefeller. There are also related maps, clippings, and periodicals.
