A NOTE ON TERMINOLOGY

This book ranges over considerable historical and geographic terrain. As such, it takes a practical approach to names and terminology, opting for familiarity over lexicological consistency. Chinese names are presented in the mainlands pinyin transliteration system, except in instances where names originate from regional dialects of Chinese, like Hokkien or Cantonese, or where an alternative transliteration is more likely to be familiar. Thus, Chiang Kai-shek over Jiang Jieshi, and Teochew rather than Chaozhou. Several Southeast Asian languages lack agreed-upon systems of transliteration. Here, too, I have employed the versions of names most likely to be recognized by English-speaking readers.
