Chapter 1 The Most Important Thing You Need to Know About Wilderness Survival
The great majority of Americans will not experience getting lost in the wilderness in their lifetime. However, it is also a fact that there are a good number of folks who do get lost in the woods.
Current estimates show that there are around 500 up to 2,000 people each year who lose their way in the open when they go hunting, camping, mountain climbing, or even hiking. Some are fortunate enough to find their way back into civilized society but there are those who dont.
If you frequently go hiking or camping, it wouldnt hurt to know some wilderness survival skills. Well, you can go by the adage that it is better to have that knowledge even though you dont need it than to need that know-how and not have it.
An understanding of the fundamental principles of wilderness survival is truly important. Learn these concepts and practices and teach them to your family. They are specific skills that may save your life or the lives of the ones you love.
Two Simple Approaches
There are two general points of emphasis or approaches when you survey the plethora of expert opinions on the subject of wilderness survival. There are those that teach about how to live in the wilderness as a way of life. The other paradigm is to learn enough survival skills in order to last long enough until help arrives.
This book focuses on the second approach. Simply put, the information you will find here will help you survive the challenges of the wilderness but not exactly to make it all a way of life. The skills and tools covered in this book will be quite helpful to you in that regard.
The Key Survival Tool
Speaking of tools and kits, most people will think that these tools and other pieces of equipment are the keys to truly survival out there in the wild. It is as if their lives depended on their backpacks. However, paramedics, survival instructors, doctors, rescue volunteers, and even survivalists themselves will disagree.
The key tool for surviving in the wilderness is within you your positivity. Its no joke. You can drop your $1,000 survival kit in the ravine or lose your other equipment, but if you have that positive attitude and sheer will to survive then there is a good chance that you will make it.
The Survival Psychology
There is a psychology to survival that gives people that mental toughness necessary to tackle the stresses of living out there in the wild. The very way you perceive each challenge will dictate how long you will last. Some people are already defeated even before they begin to try.
The information here will help you. With or without a first aid kit you will learn how to save yourself from injury. Nature can provide you with pretty much everything you need to treat burns, cuts, and even fractures you just need to know where to look and what youre looking for.
With the right attitude you can persist in finding food, defend yourself from possible threats (wolves and zombies included pun intended), find or even make your own shelter, find food, find your way back to civilized society (even without GPS), and even start a fire with just a can of Coke that you were saving for your last drink.
