This book is a compilation of recent advances in the field of dynamic behavior of brittle materials with emphasis on advanced structural ceramics and transparent materials. As this book covers basic concepts and few advanced topics in the field, it is intended as an introductory guide as well as a comprehensive review for students, beginning researchers, and practicing engineers. The few books written on the dynamic behavior of materials mainly cover metals, and there is a lack of compiled knowledge on the response of nonmetallic materials, especially brittle ceramics and transparent materials with emphasis on their impact behavior. In the last few decades, these materials have become workhorses for applications against threats from high velocity impacts. Significant progress has been made in understanding the mechanisms of deformation under such conditions, and these advances have motivated the authors to create this monograph focused on the current research on the dynamic deformation of ceramics and transparent materials.
