This book is the second edition of Behavioral Decision Theory, published in 2014. The main approach and structure of this book have been retained in the new edition. However, this second edition provides a fresh overview of the idea of behavioral decision theory and related research findings such as theoretical and empirical discoveries of preference formation, time discounting, social interaction, and social decision making. The book covers a wide range from classical to relatively recent major studies concerning behavioral decision theory, which, in brief, is a general term for descriptive theories to explain the psychological knowledge related to peoples decision-making behavior. It is called a theory but is actually a combination of various psychological theories, for which no axiomatic systemssuch as those associated with the utility theory widely used in economicshave been established. The utility theory is often limited to qualitative knowledge; however, as the studies of Nobel laureates H. A. Simon, D. Kahneman, and R. Thaler have suggested, the psychological methodology and knowledge of behavioral decision theory have been applied widely in such fields as economics, business administration, and engineering and are expected to become even more useful in the future. Research into peoples decision making represents an important part in those fields, various aspects of which overlap with the scope of behavioral decision theory. This theory is closely related to behavioral economics and behavioral finance, which have come into greater use in recent years. This book will appeal especially to graduate students, advanced undergraduate students, and researchers who are interested in decision-making phenomena.Editorial ReviewsFrom the Back CoverThis book is the second edition of Behavioral Decision Theory, published in 2014. Preface to the Second Edition

Since the publication of the first edition, behavioral decision research has made noteworthy progress and has been integrated with related fields such as behavioral economics and psychology. This book is an expanded and revised edition of Behavioral Decision Theory, first published in 2014. The second edition has been substantially expanded to address these changes and provide a more detailed account of the current complexity and breadth of the field. It is hoped that the new features and expanded scope of this book will be of benefit to readers: students, researchers, and practitioners.

The second edition consists of 18 chapters. Five chapters have been added to the first edition which consisted of 13 chapters. In addition, the contents of each chapter in the first edition have been reorganized. Characteristic changes in the second edition include the following: phenomena and mathematical models of time discounting, including findings from behavior analysis and behavioral economics; issues in neuroeconomics and neuromarketing; issues in preference formation, including attitude theory and attitude change theory in social psychology; Condorcet's jury theorem in group decision-making; basic contents of game theory and experimental game theory, including repeated prisoners dilemma and social dilemma; other-regarding preferences including altruistic and social preferences; theoretical and empirical findings on social influence processes, happiness and pluralistic values; and issues of prescriptive decision-making such as nudging and boosting. In order to familiarize the readers with the field, I have also included many pictures and profiles of researchers who have made significant contributions to the field.

Although behavioral decision theory originally focused on describing individual decision-making and its processes, this book addresses issues of contact with related fields such as behavior analysis, social psychology, and behavioral economics, and tries to add not only classic studies but also relatively new literature. In addition, if I may be so bold, I have tried to incorporate the author's research findings and ideas on prescriptive decision-making. The book not only covers a wide range of basic topics in behavioral decision theory but also includes a significant amount of the authors own perspective.

I would like to thank the Springer team, especially Mr. Yutaka Hirachi, Mr. Dharaneeswaran Sundaramurthy, and Ms. Kokila Durairaj for their patience and support in editing the second edition. I am also grateful to Mr. Keita Kawasugi of the Graduate School of Waseda University for his permission to cite the figures and for his help in preparing them. I would also like to express my deepest gratitude to the various organizations and individuals who gave me permission to use their photographs and figures in the introduction of the researchers in this book, and who provided valuable suggestions for behavioral decision research. In particular, I would like to thank Professors Baruch Fischhoff at Carnegie Mellon University, Paul Slovic at theUniversity of Oregon, and Michael Smithson at Australian National University for sending me their recent photographs for thisbook. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to NTT Service Evolution Laboratories, the Sunaga Research Institute, the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) for their grants (No. 17K03637, and No. 18H03641), and Waseda University for their Special Research Project Grants, which helped me to produce this book.

Preface to the First Edition

This book provides an overview of the idea of behavioral decision theory and related research findings. Behavioral decision theory is described briefly as the general term for descriptive theories to explain the psychological knowledge related to peoples decision-making behavior. It is called theory, but it is a combination of various psychological theories, for which no axiomatic systems such as those with which the utility theory widely used in economics have been established, but it is often limited to qualitative knowledge. As the studies of H. A. Simon, who won the Nobel Prize for economics in 1978, and D. Kahneman, who won the prize in 2002 suggest, however, the psychological methodology and knowledge of behavioral decision theory have been applied widely in such fields as economics, business administration, and engineering, and are expected to become useful in the future.

Behavioral decision theory is related closely to behavioral economics and behavioral finance, which have been popular in recent years. Behavioral economics is an attempt to understand actual human economic behavior, and behavioral finance studies human behavior in financial markets. The research of peoples decision-making represents an important part also in these fields, in which various aspects overlap with the scope of behavioral decision theory.

This book covers a range from classical to relatively recent major studies related to behavioral decision theory. It comprises six partsPart I: Behavioral Decision Theory and the Idea of It (Chap. 1), Part II: Preference Reversal Phenomenon and Description of the Phenomenon (Chaps. 2, 3, and 4), Part III: Expected Utility Theory and Counterexamples (Chaps. 5 and 6), Part IV: Decision Making and Prospect Theory (Chaps. 7 and 8), Part V: The Framing Effect and Its Descriptions (Chaps. 9 and 10), Part VI: Decision-making Process and Its Theory (Chaps. 11 and 12), and Part VII: Behavioral Decision Theory and Good Decision Making (Chap. 13).
