Examination Physical Education
In recent decades physical education has moved from the margins, redefining itself as an academic subject. An important component of this transformation has been the introduction of high-stakes examinations at key points in a students school career and the emergence of examination physical education as the dominant paradigm in many educational systems around the world.
This book is the first to explore the growing international literature on examination physical education and draw on research to extend the political, academic and professional debates around the subject to explore its limitations and possibilities. Addressing key topics such as curriculum development, assessment methods and teacher education, it seeks to assess how our existing knowledge of examination physical education can be best translated into pedagogical practice in the classroom. Complementing other texts in the Routledge Studies in Physical Education and Youth Sport Series, it makes an original and informed contribution to current discussions of physical education.
Examination Physical Education: Policy, Practice and Possibilities is important reading for any student, researcher or teacher educator with an interest in physical education, sports pedagogy and education policy.

Policy, practice and possibilities future directions?
Firstly, to my co-author Professor Dawn Penney. Thank you! Thank you for the collegial support and friendship over the past decade. You took a punt on me, when you really did not need to or have to, and for that I am thankful.
From an initial idea to the finished product you believed in the importance of this project (and me!) as well as the contribution it would and could make to the practices of examination and senior secondary physical education.
I look forward to our ongoing discussions and writing together over the coming months, years and decades.
Secondly, to the Faculty of Education, Monash University, Victoria, Australia. This book would not have been possible without the support during the second half of 2015 where I had the opportunity to undertake research leave/sabbatical (OSP).
Thirdly, to my colleagues in the PE community. You know who you are. Thank you. Without your ongoing support I am not sure what would have happened.
Finally, to the team at Routledge. Simon Whitmore and Cecily Davey in particular deserve a mention. You have been wonderful in your support during the ups and downs. You have been gracious and more than accommodating. I hope you like the product!

Internationally, there has been considerable interest in the development, implementation and enactment of new official curriculum texts, associated assessment and pedagogical practices in examination and senior secondary physical education (Brown & Penney, 2013; Green, 2005; Thorburn, 2008). This field of research examining physical education as an examinable subject is a recent innovation in countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand. With respect to curriculum, pedagogy and assessment each country must consider conceptual and curriculum coherence issues, and while individual countries (and some jurisdictions within these countries) grapple with such issues, they also face notably common and consistent questions within and about examination and senior secondary physical education. This book seeks to connect, engage and extend political, academic and professional debates related to worthwhile and essential knowledge within examination and senior secondary physical education and how this knowledge is translated into pedagogical practice in the classroom. It extends and complements other texts in the series of books published in the Routledge Physical Education and Youth Sport Series (Edited by Professor David Kirk), by presenting an informed and unique contribution focussing on issues of policy and practice in examination and senior secondary physical education.
