To anyone who knows me, or even just comes to visit, its very evident that I adore baking there are nine ovens in total on our small five-acre property here in the Derwent Valley in Tasmania, a region brimming with a diverse range of fresh produce. When we first viewed the property, I was drawn to a small building adjacent to the main house: all I could picture was the opportunity to live out a lifelong dream to set up a small cooking school, a space where I could bake to my hearts content and share the sheer pleasure of that experience with others. What makes me so attracted to baking? Perhaps its because it runs in the family; my great grandparents operated a bakery in Hobart. Arguably, its in the blood. There is something about it that just feels right and comfortable.

Ive come to realise through the decades that baking is multifaceted in many positive ways. It is in essence an act for yourself, sparking and enabling creativity, but its great strength is that its something that can be shared readily with others. One of my grandmothers was inspirational in this respect. She had three corner shelves in her kitchen, stacked with tins of freshly baked treats to serve with a cuppa to anyone who called in, whether it be family, friends, neighbours or even tradespeople. No one ever went away hungry or empty-handed she always gave them something to take with them for later on.When I was young I couldnt wait to get my very own kitchen and when our six children came along, what times we had baking together!
