Alan AtKisson is president of AtKisson + Associates, Inc., a consulting firm that focuses on sustainability and cultural change, and Director of Arts & Culture for the Sustainability Institute in Vermont, USA. He is also a Senior Fellow on sustainability policy with Redefining Progress. His first book, on the human response to global trends, will be published by Chelsea Grean Press in 1999. AtKisson was a co-founder of Sustainable Seattle, and has since been a consultant to government agencies and community forums on sustainable development issues all over the world. Herbert Girardet, a UN Global 500 Award recipient, is visiting professor for environmental planning at Middlesex University, London, and chair of the Schumacher Society, UK. He is author of The Gaia Atlas of Cities and co-author of Making Cities Work which was published by Earthscan for Habitat II and of the Report Creating A Sustainable London (1996). His documentary on Londons metabolism, Metropolis, was shown on British Television (Channel 4) in 1994. Most recently he wrote Creating Sustainable Cities, Green Books, Dartington, Devon, UK, 1999.
Jorge E Hardoy founded the Instituto Internacional de Medio Ambiente y Desarrollo (IIED-Amrica Latina) and was its President until his death in 1993. He also founded the Human Settlements Programme of the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED) in 1977 and was its Director. He was also President of the National Commission for Historic Monuments in Argentina and Editor of the journal Medio Ambiente y Urbanizacion. Qualifying as an architect in 1950 with a Masters and PhD from Harvard University in City and Regional Planning, he wrote widely on both historical and contemporary urban issues, but mostly in Spanish. Among his publications with Earthscan are Squatter Citizen: Life in the Urban Third World (with David Satterthwaite), published in 1989, The Poor Die Young; Housing and Health in Third World Cities (edited with Sandy Cairncross and David Satterthwaite), published in 1990 and Environmental Problems in Third World Cities (with Diana Mitlin and David Satterthwaite) published in 1992. He was a former President of the Inter-American Planning Society, twice a Guggenheim fellow and advisor of the World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission).
Graham Haughton is head of the Centre for Urban Development and Environmental Management (CUDEM) at Leeds Metropolitan University. His research interests include sustainable development, urban development and labour markets. Recent books include Sustainable Cities (1994, with Colin Hunter, Jessica Kingsley Publishers and 1999, Stationary Office) and an edited collection, Community Economic Development (1999, Stationary Office). Michaela Hordijk is a geographer specializing in urban environmental management and is external assessor of the Cities for Life Forum in Peru. Marianne Kjellen is a researcher at the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI), and a doctoral student at the Department of Human Geography of the University of Stockholm. Her research focus is currently environment and water issues in Southern cities. She has coordinated the multi-city study on household environments in Accra, Jakarta, So Paulo and Port Elizabeth for the past three years, and based a number of publications on this work. Ritu Kumar is an economist working with the Commonwealth Science Council, Science and Technology Division, Commonwealth Secretariat, London, UK.
