From databases to cultural competency; from dark tourism to emotional labor; from compassion to landscaping. This book shows the hidden work of municipal management in an enjoyably readable format.
Mary E. Guy,University of Colorado Denver
Zavattaros ground-breaking work shines a light on an area of public service few consider but is vitally connected to all of us the care of the dead and public cemeteries. With fascinating interviews with city sextons across the US, she highlights the complex management challenges with preserving the memories of the dead, dealing with cultural complexities as communities change, and the critical role of empathy in this unique set of front-line public services. This should be required reading for all interested in developing a nuanced understanding of the full range of public management activities.

To the sometimes-invisible public servants whose stories I am privileged to learn and tell
To my parents
Contents
I did an interview for this book while sitting on a toilet.
Let me explain.
On September 4, 2019, my dad went into the hospital. My parents live about three hours south of me here in Orlando. They still live in the same town, indeed same condominium where I grew up. I am an only child, and even though I have experienced death in my family (grandparents, a great aunt), I somehow keep a mental block related to my parents dying. We are quite close, and frankly the thought of it makes me queasy still. And this is even though I understand death comes.
My mom called me early evening September 4 to tell me dad was going into the hospital with a urinary tract infection (UTI). No big deal, I thought. Dad has a history of UTIs so I assumed this was going to be another short trip. What happened after that was anything but routine.
My dad somehow went into septic shock. Sepsis is often deadly and is the bodys response to infection, often setting off a chain reaction that shuts down the bodys organs. My dad apparently got chills and a high fever at the same time, alerting doctors to the septic shock. They immediately brought him to the intensive care unit (ICU). I found much of this out only days after I went home.
I drove home still not knowing all these details and simply packed an overnight bag, thinking he would be in and out of the hospital, and I could support my mom a bit. By the time I arrived, dad was hooked up to what doctors were calling a Christmas tree of antibiotics large poles holding several bags of medicine. ICU doctors kept telling mom and I that he is extremely sick, asking if we had paperwork indicating if they could resuscitate or not. We had to find the living will to clarify my dads wishes.
