Acknowledgments
This book represents the culmination of an Australian Research Council (ARC) project examining Australias nuclear choices. In addition to the financial support of the ARC, we would like to acknowledge the support of Australias Department of Defence and the Lowy Institute for International Policy, both of which were partners in the project between 2008 and 2012.
We have accumulated a number of important debts in the preparation of this book. We would especially like to thank Hugh White, Richard Brabin-Smith, Allan Behm and Paul Dibb for input at critical stages of the drafting process, and the participants in a seminar at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre at the ANU for useful suggestions. John Carlson was particularly generous with his time and expertise in providing comments on the final text. We would also like to thank the anonymous referee at Ashgate who provided valuable advice on the review copy.
High value research assistance has been central to the completion of this book during a period where our increasing commitments outside the project meant that time was at a premium. Special thanks goes to Dr Helen Taylor whose research and coordination skills kept us in line and added real value to the final product. Without her support, this book would have taken much longer and may not have been completed. Cathy Moloney, Kalman Robertson and Olivia Cable provided important research assistance at critical stages in the books evolution. Kathy Bailey and Meegan Thorley deserve thanks for administrative support in managing budgets, booking shuttle services between Canberra and Brisbane, and organizing various meetings. Finally, we would like to thank Brenda Sharp and Stephanie Peake at Ashgate for their professional and highly responsive support, particularly during the final stages of the project.
A few sections in chapters 25 draw on Andrew ONeils unpublished PhD thesis, Constraints and Continuity: The Evolution of Australias Non-proliferation Policy, 197596 (Flinders University, 1999), and Michael Clarkes article The Fraser governments uranium decision and the foundations of Australian Nonproliferation Policy: A Reappraisal, Australian Journal of Politics and History 58, no. 2 (June 2012), 22135.
