Kate Brown is a Senior Lecturer in Social Policy and Criminology at the University of York, UK. She has been researching and writing about how vulnerability is lived, theorised and governed for around a decade, particularly focusing on the lives and perspectives of those who are deemed vulnerable. She previously worked as a practitioner and manager in the voluntary sector and continues to be active in services for vulnerable women and children.
Estibaliz de Miguel-Calvo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology II at the University of the Basque Country, Spain. She previously worked for almost 10 years as a social worker and social educator for prisoners in a non-governmental organisation. She is a member of GEISPE, International Thematic Network on Gender and the Penal System. Her research interests include women in prison, gender and the penal system, the sociology of emotions and love.
Katie Ellis is a Research Fellow and Lecturer at the University of Sheffield, UK. She uses research to advocate for young people living in out-of-family environments and has received funding from the Leverhulme Trust, ESRC and British Academy. Ellis is interested in concepts of vulnerability, responsibilisation and resilience, and her research considers the relevance of these themes to children in care.
M. Victoria Gmez is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Analysis at the University Carlos III of Madrid, Spain. She is one of the coordinators of the European Sociological Association Research Network on Urban Sociology. Her current research interests include local belonging, vulnerability, urban inequality, urban sustainability and neighbourhood dynamics.
Teija Karttunen holds a PhD in Social Work from the University of Jyvskyl, Finland. Her dissertation focuses on womens substance abuse treatment from a women-specific perspective. She currently holds a position as a social work manager in psychosocial services for the City of Vantaa. She has extensive experience as a social worker and manager in substance abuse treatment services and in family and child protection services. Her research interests include intervention research, substance abuse and issues of gender and parenting in substance abuse treatment services.
Suvi Krok holds a PhD in Social Work from the University of Tampere, Finland. She has worked as a senior researcher and lecturer in social work at the universities of Tampere and Jyvskyl. She also has extensive experience as a social worker and project manager. Her research interests include poverty, coping strategies of low-income lone mothers, social work and social benefit systems.
