Clinton, New Terrorism and the Origins of the War on Terror: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Clinton, New Terrorism and the Origins of the War on Terror" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

A frequent assumption of the American-led war on terror and its accompanying discourse originated largely with the George W. Bush Administration, and that there was a counterterrorism policy revolution in the U.S. political arena. Challenging these assumptions, through a genealogical analysis of U.S. terrorism and counterterrorism discourses, this book demonstrates a distinct continuity (and lack of change) of U.S. counterterrorism policy, from Ronald Reagan, to Bill Clinton, and through to George W. Bush. The book focuses on President Clintons discursive construction of new terrorism, or catastrophic terrorism, and the counterterrorism practices implemented by the Clinton Administration, while simultaneously comparing it with President Reagans and President George W. Bushs approaches to counterterrorism. It shows how the war on terror can be traced to earlier periods, and that the so-called Bush revolution was largely built upon the existing framework established by President Reagan and President Clinton. Prior to the 2001 terrorist attacks, Clinton had expanded Reagans first war on terrorism discourse and constructed the new terrorism discourse, characterised by the notions of borderless threats, home-grown terrorism, WMD-terrorism, cyberterrorism, and rogue states. Clintons new terrorism discourse provided a useful framework for George W. Bush to discursively respond to the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001.Aiming to uncover the myth of President George W. Bushs foreign policy revolution and contribute to a deeper historical understanding of the U.S.-led war on terror, it will be of great use to postgraduates and scholars of US foreign policy, security studies and terrorism studies.

Clinton, New Terrorism and the Origins of the War on Terror
A frequent assumption of the American-led war on terror and its accompanying discourse originated largely with the George W. Bush Administration, and that there was a counterterrorism policy revolution in the US political arena. Challenging these assumptions, through a genealogical analysis of US terrorism and counterterrorism discourses, this book demonstrates a distinct continuity (and lack of change) of US counterterrorism policy, from Ronald Reagan, to Bill Clinton and through to George W. Bush.
The book focuses on President Clintons discursive construction of new terrorism, or catastrophic terrorism, and the counterterrorism practices implemented by the Clinton Administration, while simultaneously comparing it with President Reagans and President George W. Bushs approaches to counter-terrorism. It shows how the war on terror can be traced to earlier periods, and that the so-called Bush revolution was largely built upon the existing framework established by President Reagan and President Clinton. Prior to the 2001 terrorist attacks, Clinton had expanded Reagans first war on terrorism discourse and constructed the new terrorism discourse, characterised by the notions of borderless threats, home-grown terrorism, WMD-terrorism, cyberterrorism and rogue states. Clintons new terrorism discourse provided a useful framework for George W. Bush to discursively respond to the terrorist attacks on 11 September 2001.

Contents
This book began as a PhD dissertation. For the publication of this book, I would like to express my deepest thanks to Professor Richard Jackson, who is my supervisor at Aberystwyth University in Wales, the UK and the University of Otago in New Zealand. Richard has not only been an exceptional supervisor from an academic perspective but an invaluable source of support and encouragement. Under his tutelage, I established solid theoretical training in international relations and, particularly, in social constructivism, critical discourse analysis and the American-led war on terror. His hospitality and enthusiasm helped me overcome several tough times throughout my candidature. He guided me and helped me find myself through studying discourse, language and word.
I also appreciated the support of Professor Kevin Clements, who is my co-supervisor and director of the National Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies (NCPACS). His attitude toward life encouraged me to devote myself to academia, to learn and practice peace and to pursue a better life for our loved ones. In addition, I am particularly indebted to Professor Inderjeet Parmar, the co-editor of Routledge Studies in US Foreign Policy, for his interest in my work and his contribution to the publication.
Furthermore, I want to express my immense gratitude to my family, particularly two outstanding women: my wife, Lan-Ting and my sister, Fei-Yun. The former gave me love and constructive critiques of my work and my life; her company and strong support have been the most powerful driving force to enable me to think and act bravely. The latter guided me and offered me precious advice in each stage of my life. We had a wonderful time together in Britain. I also want to express my special appreciation to my dear parents, Huai-Ching and Shu-Chen. They encouraged me to pursue wisdom and knowledge. They taught me a great deal and provided me so much in my formative years and during this project. I deeply appreciate them.
