Political Learning and CitizenshipEducation under Conflict

How do youngsters acquire citizenship orientations such as respect for authority and the law in situations of conflict, terror, and chaos? What kind of education produces a radicalized youngster who will become a suicide bomber? How do secular and religious ideas in education conflict in a highly charged political, religious, and ethnic setting?

The central objective of this book is to analyze the characteristics of the social contexts and environments in conflict situations, and the impact that these socializing environments may have on the political learning and emerging citizenship orientations of youngsters. Special attention is given to the socializing environments of Palestinian and Israeli youngsters, drawing on material recently collected in Israel.

Ichilovs incisive research uses a multilevel and interdisciplinary approach to argue that political learning is structured within social environments and that there are fundamental differences between the socializing environments in conflict and non-conflict situations.

Of interest to educators, academics, and public policy professionals, this book is a key addition to our understanding of socialization and the formation of political beliefs.

For many years I have been conducting research and writing articles and books on how the political world of young people is being shaped and changed, and on the role played by citizenship education in preparing youngsters to become adult citizens. Focusing mainly on Israeli society, I studied citizenship orientations, including perceptions of war and peace, of Arab and Jewish youngsters, of new immigrants from the former Soviet Union, of students in academic and vocational schools, of youngsters representing diverse ethnic groups, and of city and kibbutz youth. My examination of citizenship education included the analysis of curricular materials, the study of teachers perceptions of citizenship education, service learning programs, and school climate. I was greatly impressed by the immense variety of socializing contexts and environments in which Israeli youngsters grow up, and it became clear to me that these contexts play a vital role in shaping the political world of youngsters.
