This volume is about economists, economics, and issues of concern to Indian society. Some essays are expository, and some satirical. Together, they offer a commentary on the state of the discipline of economics today and on aspects of contemporary Indias society and polity. The volume affords insights into, among other things,- the pervasive influence of economists such as Kenneth Arrow and Anthony Atkinson, and thinkers such as Tom Paine, Jonathan Swift, and Dadabhai Naoroji;- the place of markets and game theory (and even crime fiction!) in present-day economics;- the affectations and convoluted mathematisation of a good deal of mainstream economics; and- Indias recent political climate, and the conduct of various arms of the legislature, the executive, and the judiciary in the country.Engaging and lucidly written, this volume should be of interest to scholars of economics, political science, development studies, South Asian studies, and, above all, the general reader.

History started badly and hav been getting steadily worse.
Nigel Molesworth in Geoffrey Willanss Down With Skool! (1953)
There is a rumour to the effect that economists are not really human, but rather robots, or aliens, or, worse still, zombies. I am in no position to comment on these speculations while still preserving myself from the risk of betraying the tribe to which I belong. Having said this, I wonder if I may advance the possibility that the members of this species may actually be androids infected by certain production defects which occasionally make them human in unexpected ways, that is to say, capable of saying nice things about others, of taking the trouble of explaining their esoteric theories to those that do not speak their language, of reading detective stories, of taking a squiggle-eyed view of their own work and that of their colleagues, and of sometimes taking a break from their grim-death view of the world in favour of actually finding something funny about the universe they inhabit. This book is a very small collection of previously published essays that reflect the stated aberrant-humanoid view of the dismal scientist.
