Preface

The EPIA Conference on Artificial Intelligence returned to Lisbon this year. EPIAs second edition, in 1986, followed by the 1989 and 2011 editions, already took place in this unique city. The 21st edition, EPIA 2022, took place at the University of Lisbon, during August 31 to September 2, 2022 ( https://epia2022.inesc-id.pt/ ).

As in previous editions, this international conference was hosted with the patronage of the Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence (APPIA). The purpose of the conference is to promote research in all areas of AI, covering both theoretical/foundational issues and applications, and the scientific exchange among researchers, engineers, and practitioners in related disciplines. The program, as in previous editions, was based on a set of thematic tracks dedicated to specific themes of AI. EPIA 2022 was composed of 12 tracks:

AI4IS

Artificial Intelligence for Industry and Societies

AIL

Artificial Intelligence and Law

AIM

Artificial Intelligence in Medicine

AIPES

Artificial Intelligence in Power and Energy Systems

AITS

Artificial Intelligence in Transportation Systems

ALEA

Artificial Life and Evolutionary Algorithms

AmIA

Ambient Intelligence and Affective Environments

GAI

General Artificial Intelligence

IROBOT

Intelligent Robotics

KDBI

Knowledge Discovery and Business Intelligence

MASTA

Multi-Agent Systems: Theory and Applications

TeMA

Text Mining and Applications

The conference program included 3 invited talks:

  • Joo Gama (University of Porto, Portugal),

    with a talk on Current Trends in Learning from Data Streams;

  • Luc De Raedt (KU Leuven, Belgium),

    with a talk on From Probabilistic Logics to Neuro-Symbolic Artificial Intelligence;

  • Iryna GurevychIryna Gurevych (Technical University Darmstadt, Germany),

    with a talk on Comment Link Revise: Towards a General Framework for Modelling Interconnected Texts.

EPIA 2022 had a special focus on young researchers. The conference included a doctoral symposium, where students in the early stages of their doctoral research presented their main research ideas and discussed them with other students and the senior scientific community. The conference also included an AI Talent Fair, which connected companies with the best young talent in Portugal. The AI Talent Fair included a panel with the title AI talent in the market: training, attracting, and engaging, in which C-level players in industry and key actors in training AI talented Human Resources discussed the AI Talent in a holistic perspective.

For this edition, 64 papers were accepted, with authors from 18 different countries (Austria, Brazil, Czechia, Ecuador, Egypt, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Morocco, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Ukraine, UK, USA). All accepted papers were carefully revised by at least three reviewers from the Program Committee of the corresponding track.

The conference organizers are thankful to the student volunteers, the AI talent fair organizers, the doctoral symposium chairs, and the thematic track organizing chairs, together with their respective Program Committee members. All these individuals did an amazing work, contributing to a very successful conference. The organizers would also like to express their gratitude to all the members of the EPIA International Steering Committee, for their guidance regarding the scientific organization of EPIA 2022.
