Introduction

Yoga is a cultural fad, especially in the west. Though its always been around, it only became universally popular within recent decades. This is actually a good thing, unlike most other fads. Yoga has been demonstrated by large bodies of peer reviewed scientific research to have a host of benefits for those who practice it. It is a wonderful tool for anyone interested in exercise, inner peace, or who just wants to live a healthier life.

So many yoga gurus make conflicting claims about the benefits of yoga and thats why we here at Prosence are here to help guide you to the truth. Some claims about yoga made in the world are supported or explained by science, and others are not. Its time to learn what yoga can really do for you in your daily life.

Chapter 1 A Brief History of Yoga

Yoga has been around for a very long time. Academic historical research supports that the first practitioners of yoga may have introduced it as a practice somewhere between 5 to 10 millennia ago. There is a bit dispute over the exact date of introduction, but conclusive evidence points to it at least having begun 5 millennia ago. Speculation leads to the possibility that yoga has been around twice as long, for 10 millennia. Though the exact period isnt known yet, it is safe to assume it began within that range.

Yoga initially began with heavy spiritual undertones. Early practices involved the interpretation and promotion of yoga techniques by spiritual seers who also recorded their techniques and ideas on a series of manuscripts. A heavy amount of the spirituality surrounding yoga involved the idea of sacrifice. Ancient practitioners supported sacrificing the negative parts of oneself through the acquisition of knowledge (typically of oneself and the world around them), and goal oriented action.

For a while yogas practice and tenants were decentralized to the point that many of its explanations and recommendations contradict one another. Eventually a yoga practitioner and scholar known as Patanjali reconciled many different approaches to yoga in what he called the eight-limbed path. This was one of the first major attempts to standardize yoga practice and was heavily spiritual in that it was thought to lead practitioners towards enlightenment.

Eventually yoga began to transition to more of a physical-empirical focus with the development of Tantra yoga, though it still remained heavily based in spiritualism. In Tantra yoga, practitioners would focus on the bodily sensations of yoga and ways they could use it as a tool to affect their physical body. This was primarily driven by spiritual concerns and motives, but was a precursor to more modern practices based on contemporary kinesiology.

The focus on kinesiology and exercise science as well as psychology came later on, in the 21st century. Given the scientific nature of modern life and high amount of productivity and accuracy that can be seen in modern science, yoga was studied in extreme depth. This provided valuable insight into the mechanisms by which yoga works and affects the body and mind in positive ways. However, this was all done because yoga became popular in recent times which incentivized researchers to focus on the topic and explore it for the benefit of the world.
