CONTENTS
Arab Periodicals and Serials: A Subject Bibliography is a guide to serials and periodicals in Arabic, English, French and other European languages published in the Arab countries or in the Western hemisphere, both current and cessations. The bibliography is a research tool designed to aid scholars, business people, Middle East specialists, students of Middle East studies and librarians.
Arab serials and periodicals are considered primary sources of information on subject matters related to the Arab world. Lack of comprehensive bibliographies of Arab serials in the English language has hindered the work of librarians and Middle East specialists who need to identify a large number of such publications published in or about the Arab world. Present bibliographies are limited in scope and coverage either to serials published only in the Arab world, or in a given country in the area. Examples of the former are Arab Periodicals: A General Directory of Current Periodicals issued in the Arab World (Cairo, the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization, 1973) and the Library of Congresss Accessions List: Middle East. Examples of directories covering only one country are found in sections of various Arab national bibliographies: the National Bibliography of the Libyan Arab Republic (pt. I: Periodicals) (1972) and the Bibliographie de lAlgrie: Index Cumulatif des Priodiques (published by the Bibliothque Nationale dAlger in 1969). A directory covering Moroccan periodicals from 1904 to 1961 was published by the National Library of Morocco.
Union catalogs of Arabic serials and periodicals are emerging slowly on the library scene as another acknowledgement of the value of these publications to researchers everywhere. The recent Union Catalogue of Arabic Serials and Newspapers in British Libraries was compiled by the Middle East Libraries Committee and published in 1977 by Mansell under the auspices of the Institute of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Lancaster. It is expected that work on a union catalog of Arabic serials in U.S. libraries will begin soon. Since this Bibliography is arranged by subjects, it will be a valuable tool to use in connection with the proposed American union catalog to locate periodicals on given subjects.
Arrangement and format of entry:
Entries are arranged alphabetically under broad, subject headings normally used in similar directories and were selected on the basis of the material available. Titles which are not in the Roman alphabet have been transliterated, and where possible, an English or French title has also been provided. The entries are numbered consecutively throughout the list. Bibliographical information for each entry includes title, subtitle (if any), sponsoring body, mailing address when ascertained, frequency, year first published and annual subscription when available, in local currency and the equivalent in the U.S. dollar.
Acknowledgements:
