Dining Out

From take-it-to-go hot dogs to gourmet platters on white-clothed tables, little Reykjavk has an astonishing assortment of places to eat. Here, a wealth of Icelandic and New Nordic restaurants serve innovative variations on local fish and lamb. Outside the capital, eateries range from high-end restaurants to simple gas-station grills.

Food Culture

Reykjavk has seen a recent surge in restaurant openings, many of the highest standard and expressing all manner of culinary creativity. Cafes by day turn into restaurants and bars at night. Tapas-style dining, high-concept Icelandic cuisine and burger joints all rub shoulders.

Icelandic Specialities

If you see a queue in Reykjavk, it probably ends at a plsur (hot dog) stand. Fiskispa (fish soup) comes courtesy of family recipes, while kjtspa (meat soup) usually features veggies and chunks of lamb. Icelandic lamb is hard to beat, with free-range sheep munching chemical-free grasses and herbs. In the past, Icelanders merely kept the cheeks and tongues of orskur (cod) a delicacy and exported the rest; but today youll commonly find cod fillets on the menu, along with sa (haddock) and bleikja (Arctic char). During the summer, try silungur (freshwater trout) and villtur lax (wild salmon). Dont miss skyr, a yoghurt-like concoction made from pasteurised skimmed milk.

Top Tips

Reserve ahead in summer for top restaurants; service may stop at 9pm.

Its not customary to tip.

Be aware there are significant conservation issues with whale, puffin and shark.
