COVID-19

We have re-checked every business in this book before publication to ensure that it is still open after the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the economic and social impacts of COVID-19 will continue to be felt long after the outbreak has been contained, and many businesses, services and events referenced in this guide may experience ongoing restrictions. Some businesses may be temporarily closed, have changed their opening hours and services, or require bookings; some unfortunately could have closed permanently. We suggest you check with venues before visiting for the latest information.

Welcome to Egypt

Egypt is all about the chat. There are few other countries that boast such a multilayered, mind-bogglingly long history and yet match that with genuine hospitality. Ive spent as much time drinking shay and having a laugh with site guardians and stall-owners as I have viewing the lauded treasures. At times Egypt is frustrating and frazzling, but lean in rather than keep it at arms length and it rewards you a thousand times over. You might come for the temples and tombs but youll leave talking about the great times you had simply chatting with Egyptians.

Pharaonic Riches

Upper Egypt is bursting with the remnants of the pharaohs. Luxor, where pharaohs, queens, courtiers and workmen planned and vividly painted tombs amid the craggy Theban hills, is undeniably the highlight. Both up and down the Nile from here though are city ruins, vast, columned temples, replete with colourful carved reliefs, and ancient quarries where the pharaohs extracted stone for their ever-more ambitious building projects.
