Covid-19

We have re-checked every business in this book before publication to ensure that it is still open after the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the economic and social impacts of COVID-19 will continue to be felt long after the outbreak has been contained, and many businesses, services and events referenced in this guide may experience ongoing restrictions. Some businesses may be temporarily closed, have changed their opening hours and services, or require bookings; some unfortunately could have closed permanently. We suggest you check with venues before visiting for the latest information.

Why I Love Belize

Belize is part Caribbean, part Latin American, and still carries the legacy of British colonization. I love the low-key, laid-back nature of the people and the seamless mix of cultures that make up the street life, music, language, food and festivals Belizean, Creole, mestizo, Garifuna, Maya and even Mennonites and expats. I love that you can be diving on the barrier reef one day and hiking in the jungle the next. And, away from the popular cayes, Belize still feels a bit like a travelers secret at least for now.

INTO THE BLUE

With the worlds second-longest barrier reef and a sprinkling of atolls, the diving and snorkeling off the Belize coast is undeniably world-class. The star of the show is the Blue Hole on Lighthouse Reef but with everything from snorkeling with sharks in the shallows around the cayes to diving around stunning offshore atolls, this is a mind-blowing underwater adventure.

Seen from above, the 400ft depth of the Blue Hole Natural Monument (pictured) creates a perfect circle of startling deep blue azure. Below, sheer walls and mysterious darkness greet divers, along with schools of reef sharks and the odd hammerhead.

The Elbow is the most beloved Turneffe dive site, with its enormous schools of pelagic fish and pods of dolphins. Deep water around the atolls guarantees excellent visibility and some of the most thrilling wall-diving youll find anywhere in the Caribbean.

The origins of these prolific schools of nurse sharks and southern stingrays date back to when local fisherfolk would offload the remains of their catch. Shark Ray Alley is now a protected area and the top snorkeling destination in Hol Chan Marine Reserve, a protected part of the Belize Barrier Reef that harbors an amazing diversity of colorful coral and other marine life.
