COVID-19

We have re-checked every business in this book before publication to ensure that it is still open after the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the economic and social impacts of COVID-19 will continue to be felt long after the outbreak has been contained, and many businesses, services and events referenced in this guide may experience ongoing restrictions. Some businesses may be temporarily closed, have changed their opening hours and services, or require bookings; some unfortunately could have closed permanently. We suggest you check with venues before visiting for the latest information.

Welcome to Tasmania

I spent my childhood in Hobart, wheeling my bike between the beach and the bush. It was the 70s, man Tasmania was a magical, laid-back place to be a kid. Like so many other islanders, I was lured away in my twenties by the mainland big smoke but I return to the small smoke as often as possible, and am thrilled to see MONA firing Tasmanias cultural scene and turning the worlds understanding of the island on its head. Not to mention the beer, the gin, the whisky Whos for a drink?

From hour-long beach strolls to delightful day walks, Tasmanias short walks are outstanding. But the longer hikes here have really put Tasmania on the map: spend four days or more tramping the trail and youll truly get to know the island (and its native critters) in all its splendour. This is one of the few places left on the planet where wilderness is still fabulously isolating yet accessible.
