About the Contributors

Confucius (551479 BCE) was, and still is, Chinas most famous teacher, philosopher, and political theorist. He began his studies to reconstruct the moral and material welfare of his people. His ideaschief among them that all people are teachable, improvable, and perfectibleprofoundly influenced the civilization of East Asia.

Mao Tse-Tung (18931976), the leader of the Peoples Republic of China from its inception in 1949 until his death in 1976 is, in the minds of many, the single most important person in Chinas history. For twenty-two years he led Chinese armies in guerrilla warfare against foreign invaders, and then against the Chinese government in an effort to effect a complete sociopolitical revolution in his country. He succeeded, and then became the spokesman for a quarter of the human race.

Dr. Wade Baskin served as Chairman of the Department of Modern and Classical Language at Southeastern State College and completed his advanced studies at Columbia University.
