    The Road Back

I am writing these words in early spring of 2020 as the United States and most parts of the world are gripped by the coronavirus pandemic and the globe-spanning recession it has caused. Not since the Great Recession of 2008the wounds of which never fully healedhave so many people faced economic uncertainty and displacement.

I would never try to sell you on a magic pill approach to economic calamity, either on a macro or personal scale. Clearly, there is an urgent need for responsive and expeditious social policy to help people respond to this financial meltdown. At the same time, individuals have within themselves private agencies of thought, action, and intention that can help promote resilience and invite recovery during the toughest of times. This is what Bounce Back is dedicated to.

The abridged works in this collection, each of which features its own introduction, supply you with the broadest possible means of individually responding to economic crisis. I believe strongly that life supplies us with several inner tools and all should be used in pursuit of productive outcomes. Hence, these works are, by varying measures, practical, budgetary, spiritual, psychological, and ethical. Taken together, they summon all of your powers.

The Richest Man in Babylon by George S. Clason is a classic guide to rock-ribbed principles of healthy personal finance. I must be frank with you. You may not be in a position to put all of its ideas into action if you are swimming to keep from sinking; but if you can, even incrementally, abide by Clasons methods you will be on stronger footing and poised to take full advantage of the recovery when it arrives.

Joseph Murphys How to Attract Money is, in some respects, a polar opposite but also an important adjunct to Clasons work. Murphys book is a spiritual and meditative guide to money getting. If you know my work, you know that I take seriously the principle that thoughts are causative. We do not live under one mental super law. I am, however, convinced that thought causation is one aspect, and often a neglected one, of our personal power. This book helps you maximize its promise.

Acres of Diamonds is a valuable meditation on how to transform seemingly modest ideas into large returns. Its author Russell H. Conwell, the founder of Temple University, was dedicated to ethical commerce and self-development. He asks you to think in very grounded ways about exercising your highest potential. What is the best idea? The one that actually gets acted on. That is Conwell in a nutshell.

Ralph Waldo Emersons two essays Power and Wealth are among his most practical works. The Transcendentalist philosopher describes the constituent elements of personal power and then considers how to earn and spend in ways that are self-reproducing so that your relationship to money is one of growth.

Finally, I include a condensation of Napoleon Hills Think and Grow Richthe first book that I abridged and introduced for G&D Medias Condensed Classics program, and a central work in my own life. Few books are as loved and as misunderstood as Think and Grow Rich. Simply put, it is the greatest teaching we have on how to devise and actualize a moneymaking idea.

If I had a magic formula to surviving economic chaos I would shout it from the rooftops. I do not. But I can promise you, seeker to seeker, householder to householder, worker to worker, that the ideas in this collection will heighten your resiliency and resourcefulness, and give you the greatest possible velocity to bounce back from these challenging times.
