Language, Expressivity and Cognition: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Language, Expressivity and Cognition" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Providing an up-to-date, multi-perspective and cross-linguistic account of the centrality of the expressive function in communication, this book explores the conceptualization of emotions in language and the high emotional temperature of a variety of contemporary discourses.
Adopting a number of methodological angles, both qualitative and quantitative, the chapters present insights from cognitive linguistics, (critical) discourse analysis, corpus linguistics and sociolinguistics, as well as those resulting from the combination of these approaches. Using a wide variety of data types, from song lyrics and TV series to Twitter posts and political speeches, and through the analysis of a range of languages, including Arabic, English, Polish, Italian, Hungarian, and Turkish, the book offers a panoramic view of the multi-faceted interaction between language, expressivity and cognition.

We wish to thank Barbara Lewandowska-Tomaszczyk (State University of Applied Sciences in Konin) for coming up with the idea of cyclical workshops that bring together researchers interested in the interface of language and emotion the Language, Heart and Mind series of workshops. Similarly, we wish to acknowledge the advice and support on many levels from Marco Venuti (University of Catania) and Francesca Vigo (University of Catania), who have been shaping the Language, Heart and Mind project from its very beginning. With high-quality papers, methodologically and disciplinarily varied line-ups as well as remarkable thematic consistency, those meetings have been a great source of insight. Notably, some of the work discussed at the workshop held at the University of Catania in December 2020 is included in the current volume, alongside invited contributions that we were fortunate enough to be able to integrate into this book.

Thanks are also due to the anonymous reviewers for their extremely helpful observations on the book and to Krzysztof Hejduk (University of d) for his invaluable assistance throughout the editorial process.
