Every day I get to interact with amazing people from around the world who share my passion for learning experience design. Im grateful for all your support. There are a couple of you I want to thank in particular:
Willem-Jan Renger, you knew pioneering learning experience design was going to be a long and hard road. You stood by me and helped me tremendously along the way. Together with Ina van der Brug and your colleagues at Utrecht School of the Arts, you have been vital to the development of learning experience design.
Albert Lim at Nanyang Polytechnic in Singapore, thank you for inviting me over and spreading learning experience design in Asia. I truly enjoyed working together with you and your amazing staff including Garry Tan, Shirlyn Goh, Gina Tay, and Annie Ng.
Numerous people have helped with organizing and hosting LXDCON over the years. A big thank-you to Hanneke van den Broek, Rembert Sierksma, Arwen van Putten, Evert Hoogendoorn, Sjoerd Louwaars, Alette Baartmans, Monique Snijder, Leontien van Melle, Daniek Bosch, Frank Lon, Marco van Hout, Erik Mooij, the incredible volunteers, and all the others who have contributed. Preface
The beginning is the most important part of the work.
PLATO, PHILOSOPHER
Here you are. Reading this book. This could be a pivotal moment in your lifelong learning journey. A journey that started long before you opened this book.
This book is as much about learning experience design (LXD) as it is about you. It is about the next steps that you are going to take in your personal development toward mastering LXD.
Reading this book can help you grasp the fundamentals of LXD. However, reading it is not enough. Once you start to apply, share, and build on what youve learned, the contents of this book will come to life. There is so much to learn from the application of LXD, and the content of this book will put you on the right track.
You may wonder why I chose to write a book on LXD. Isnt LXD all about innovation and using new technologies for state-of-the-art learning experiences? The age of a medium or technology says nothing about its effectiveness. I care about providing a great learning experience using the technology that works best for the goals I want to achieve. Books are tangible, clearly structured, and easily accessible in a way that suits you.
Also, people are different. Some prefer a book where others prefer a video or game. Thats why this book is one of several resources that Ive created on your path in becoming a learning experience designer.
Another big advantage of writing a book is for the writer. The process of writing this book took many years, and it has helped me immensely to gather and organize my thoughts and to fully understand the concepts of LXD. It forced me to externalize all the ideas and experiences that are floating around in my brain.
