The Mechanisms of Racialization Beyond the Black/White Binary: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "The Mechanisms of Racialization Beyond the Black/White Binary" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

This book focuses on the mechanisms that undergird the operation of racialization and works to empirically define the specific mechanisms by which racialization outside of black-white paradigm operates.

The contributors highlight the advantages and benefits of using case studies from outside of the black-white racial boundary in the social scientific study of racism, racial identity, racial meaning, and racial representation. Their contributions can be grouped into three specific areas of focus: the investigation of the relationship between racialization and the state; the interplay between racialization and identities; and the role of racialization in the media. Taken together, the book lays out a roadmap for future study of racialization and the study of race beyond the racial categories of black and white

Serving as a guiding point to future research, this book will be of interest to all scholars of race, and those seeking to understand the ideologies, actions, interactions, structures and social practices associated with racialization. This book was originally published as a special issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

Bianca Gonzalez-Sobrino is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Quinnipiac University, USA. Her research examines ethnic competition and racial threat, particularly the dialectical relationship between identity and constructions of perceived threats; the processes of racial identity formation, particularly looking at Puerto Ricans; and the role of media in the construction and processes of racial and ethnic boundary making. Her work has appeared in various scholarly journals.
Devon R. Goss is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at the Oxford College of Emory University, Atlanta, USA. Her research examines the color line, particularly in relation to instances of boundary crossing in typically racialized institutions, and the impact of racialization in family formation and processes, through an examination of transracial adoption. She has published in a variety of scholarly journals and is the co-author of Diversity in Black Greek-Letter Organizations: Breaking the Line (with Wendy Marie Laybourn, 2018).

The journal Ethnic and Racial Studies was founded in 1978 by John Stone to provide an international forum for high quality research on race, ethnicity, nationalism and ethnic conflict. At the time the study of race and ethnicity was still a relatively marginal sub-field of sociology, anthropology and political science. In the intervening period the journal has provided a space for the discussion of core theoretical issues, key developments and trends, and for the dissemination of the latest empirical research.
It is now the leading journal in its field and has helped to shape the development of scholarly research agendas. Ethnic and Racial Studies attracts submissions from scholars in a diverse range of countries and fields of scholarship, and crosses disciplinary boundaries. It is now available in both printed and electronic form. Since 2015 it has published 15 issues per year, three of which are dedicated to Ethnic and Racial Studies Review offering expert guidance to the latest research through the publication of book reviews, symposia and discussion pieces, including reviews of work in languages other than English.
The Ethnic and Racial Studies book series contains a wide range of the journals special issues. These special issues are an important contribution to the work of the journal, where leading social science academics bring together articles on specific themes and issues that are linked to the broad intellectual concerns of Ethnic and Racial Studies. The series editors work closely with the guest editors of the special issues to ensure that they meet the highest quality standards possible. Through publishing these special issues as a series of books, we hope to allow a wider audience of both scholars and students from across the social science disciplines to engage with the work of Ethnic and Racial Studies.
