Acknowledgments
First, we have to acknowledge Taj and Aaliyah. Beyond the obvious of not being able to write this book without them being here, they are a joy to raise. The experience of parenting them has taught us more about ourselves than we could have ever imagined, and for that we are th ankful.
We would not be here today if it werent for the amazing love, support, and contributions of our family and friends. Raising children is a series of trial and error, and the saying It takes a village to raise a child could not be more true. Whether being physically involved or just sharing experiences, we are thankful for all those who have given their time in the support of our children and our journey as parents. Special thanks to the Brown family and Jelks family for contributing their personal experiences to help enrich th is book.

WEEKS 14
From Period
to Pregnant
Im late! I need to take a pregnancy test!
Im ovulating, lets go f or it!
Which one was it for you? Between our pregnancies with Taj and Aaliyah, we have experienced both the Wait, what? and the Lets try. Regardless of how you got here, you are here. Congratulations! Try to use this month to enjoy each other and take in the moment.
Whats Physically Happening
Calling it the first month of pregnancy is a tad misleading because, technically, people arent actually pregnant until the middle of it. Week 1 is counted from the first day of the pregnant persons last menstrual cycle, and doctors use this timing (known as gestational age) to track your pregnancy and the babys development. In a typical cycle, conception doesnt happen until around week 3, after ovulation occurs and the sperm fertilizes the egg. By the end of week 4, your future baby has set up shop in the uterine lining and settled in for the long haul. Based on this timing, the baby will actually develop for 38 weeks (full-term pregnancy), even though the pregnancy count started two weeks earlier.
In terms of symptoms, its common for a lot of people to not notice this first month, since their first sign of pregnancy is a missed period. For us, we didnt realize we were pregnant with Taj until week 5 when Rachel missed her period. This was true again for our pregnancy with Aaliyah, even though we were actively tracking Rachels cycle and trying to get pregnant. For that pregnancy, we took a pregnancy test three weeks after ovulation and discovered Rachel was pregnant again at week 5. So we missed month one for both of our pregnancies!
