Thucydides has been found guilty of indifference toward financial matters without a consideration of all the evidence. Now Lisa Kallet- Marx examines Thucydides treatment of financial resources by studying his comments on finance in the context of the whole work and scrutinizes other, chiefly epigraphic, evidence as well. Her comprehensive inspection of the Archaeology, Pentekontaetia, and history of the Archidamian War demonstrates that the role of financial resources is central to Thucydides ideas about naval power and figures prominently in his speeches and narrative. Kallet-Marxs research reveals an important stage in the historical development of thought about state power, wealth, and imperialism. Her book will greatly interest scholars of ancient economics and classicists alike.

Preface
It seems almost axiomatic that there will always be another book on Thucydides. There is usually a good reason for this, namely, a pressing need to take one more stab at understanding a writer whose intrinsic worth always repays the effort, whatever the result. This study, which originated in a doctoral dissertation completed in 1087 at the University of California at Berkeley, is yet another attempt. While I cannot, unfortunately, attribute the faults of this book to any of those whom I am about to thank for their role at various stages of its life, I can and do hold them personally responsible for the absence of whatever shortcomings it may lack.
The goal of not simply deciphering, but of understanding, Thucydides is a monumental, often impossible, enterprise for the student fighting through the thickets of his gnarled prose. One wants the best guide. As a beginner to Thucydides I was fortunate enough to spend a year reading the
