BRIEF CONTENTS

CONTENTS

PREFACE

T he fourth edition of Effective Instructional Strategies: From Theory to Practice is designed to prepare students for the complex world of the school classroom. The aim is to prepare prospective teachers to meet the challenges of todays changing classrooms. Becoming an effective teacher requires extensive knowledge and skills, as well as hard work, commitment, an inquiring mind, and the ability to learn from experiences. The quest for excellence will be difficult, but the satisfaction is worth the effort. This book, therefore, is designed to provide you with the tools for facilitating the quest and the means for achieving excellence. It was further designed to expand the pedagogical teaching knowledge of teachers and their instructional repertoires.

I have described in detail proven instructional methods, coupled with the best in planning and instructional theory, to prepare preservice teachers for entry into the classroom. The textbook will not only help prospective teachers analyze their own teaching but also provide the means for translating this thinking into effective practice, which will lead to the accomplishment of our societys educational goals. In short, it is my hope that future teachers will find this book valuable as a guide to sound educational practices. This text is intended for use in undergraduate general methods courses, but it could be a useful reference for a variety of courses and for inservice teachers.

Theory-to-Practice Approach to Instruction

This text embraces a theory-to-practice theme that runs throughout the book. It takes the latest research on teaching and applies it to the classroom. The book emphasizes the intelligent use of teaching theory and research to improve classroom instruction. Whenever possible, specific examples and teacher viewpoints are presented, not just suggestions for things to try.

No one can deny that teachers matter or that their skills will have a profound impact on student achievement. To make that impact positive, teachers must have both a deep understanding of the powerful principles of teaching as they apply to effective teaching and a clear sense of how these principles can be applied to the classroom. The effective teacher is one who constantly reflects on his or her practices and makes instructional decisions based on a clear conception of how theories and practices affect students. Effective teaching is neither a bag of tricks nor a set of abstract principles; rather, it is intelligent application of research-based teaching principles to address the reality of the classroom. This text will provide the theoretical knowledge and help you develop the practical skills needed to do the most important job you will ever doteach.

Organization of the Text

, we get ready for the classroom. The chapter focuses on the art and science of teaching, effective teaching skills, constructivism, teacher licensing, expectations and standards, accountability, and educational law. The second chapter deals with how to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse student population. We discuss team teaching, considerations for teaching students with special needs and children who are gifted and talented, and the use of technology in the diverse classroom.

. The importance of classroom management cannot be overemphasized. Indeed, a classroom must be well managed if learning is to take place. The use of technology is evolving in our schools, and you need to know how to use it effectively.
