Author's Preface
I cannot remember a time when stories and storytelling did not fill me with wonder. My parents told me stories of where their people came from, how they came to America, and the events that shaped them. My favorite family possession is an old album of photographs, some dating back a hundred years. Nearly every person captured on film had a story, a place in the history of my family's past.
Through high school and college, I found an outlet for my pursuit of stories and storytelling: theater. I never got over the sense of wonder and accomplishment when the audience was drawn into the story played out in front of them. The summers I spent in the Champlain Shakespeare Festival in Burlington, Vermont, led me to discover William Shakespeare, one of the world's best storytellers.
Later I discovered what others have found before me: the power and truth of the parables of Jesus. He surely understood that people, even those living in times and places unheard of, could grasp the point of a parable far more easily than a sermon.
We call our stories by many names: parable, allegory, myth, fable, legend, oral tradition, folk tales, and the like. Often the boundary between what is or was

real and the cause and effect of that reality finds its voice in story. Stories provide answers that events by themselves cannot answer.
The stories in this book are tales of what could be, or might have been, or even what may occur again and again. Their truth lies, hopefully, in the common thread of everyday life. They are written to be a mirror in which we see in simple, daily choices the possibility of changed lives.

Once there was a great and mighty king. While still a young man, he had led his mighty army in many battles. By the power of his army, he had conquered all the surrounding nations, and had become their king as well.
This king was so powerful that whatever he asked for, whether great or small, was brought to him at once. His subjects feared him, and the power that comes from mighty armies and great wealth.
