GOING APE
The shape didnt move.
Police! I said get out of the vehicle now!
Still nothing. My breathing had not improved, my head beganto swim, and I watched as though from a long way away as they crept up on the vehicle, guns aimed, and quickly opened the door. The big shape fell out and hit the ground with a large thunk .
Its a gorilla, Officer Willie said. He reached down and with a few good yanks pulled the mask off. A beelike buzz filled my ears and brain as I stared at the dead man. The cops flashlights illuminated that same feral face Id seen just hours before, delivering a Gorilla-Gram. Albert Cunningham.
The other officer was feeling for a pulse, but I knew there wasnt one. Id never been this close to a dead body before unless you counted the time I fell into the Dumpster on top of a dead hip-hop teacher. Hmm, I guessed that counted, but it had happened really fast and I dont remember a lot about it but Id watched enough television to know that wide-open, glassy eyes meant dead.
Do you know this gorilla, er, man? Officer Willie said to me just as the buzzing in my head grew louder. I started to sway, but then I felt a strong hand ease me to the ground.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
First of all, I must thank Shannon Bryant, who suggested the awesome title for this book. Thanks, Shannon! As always, I must thank Calista Cates-Stanturf. She is my second pair of eyes, Jennys biggest supporter, and a dauntless cheerleader and friend. I also am grateful for the Murdershewrites.com ladies, Jennifer Apodaca, Allison Brennan, Deborah LeBlanc, and Karin Tabke, for supporting me when the chips are downand especially to Jen and Karin, who never fail to encourage me to continue writing the JTP books. Thanks also go to Gary Tabke, Officer Friendly, who never hesitates to take time out of his day to answer my cop questions, even when he would rather be watching football. Or coaching it. Or something like that.
My lovely editor, Sandra Harding, and my wonderful agent, Karen Solem, always get kudos, because, of course, they deserve them.
And to my daughters, Carissa and Cambre, who really are my reason for getting out of bed every morning. Even when its really, really cold out there...
ONE
One of the most humiliating childhood experiences I can recall revolves directly around dance. In fact, it was so bad that Im surprised I can still shake my groove thing without having flashbacks. My dance teacher, Miss Larae, was tall and skinny and regal with long ballet arms and legs, a sharp pointy nose, and small beady eyes. At least thats how I remember her. She resembledmy weird teenage neighbors ferret.
Jennifer T. Partridge, she would say, in her low, nasal voice, buttocks tucked under. Tummy in. Fifth position. And I would try, but I had a hard time tucking my tummy in even back then. It just naturally wanted to poke out. I was, afterall, only six. But I stood with my left hand on the barre, holding the position, trying as hard as I could to suck my stomach in, praying she wouldnt notice me. She always did.
I was midway down the barre, trying to blend in with the line of little ballerinas, all dressed in pink leotards, pink tights, and pink ballet shoes. Then she spotted me, her ferret eyes zooming in on my form.
The ferret had found its prey. Me. She swiftly headed toward me, carrying the long pointy stick she always had in her hand, and I cringed and tried to stay perfectly still, perhapsto camouflage myself. Natures trick did not work. So much for all those documentaries my science-teacher dad made me watch.
Jennifer T. Partridge, what is this? she said, in her harsh, strident voice, and she pushed on my tummy with her pointy stick. It didnt hurt. And it might not have been so embarrassing, except I had been concentrating so hard on using the right form, the right turnout, everything taut and tucked in, that it didnt take much but that little poke to knock me off balance, and over I wentand in turn, each of the other girls in line toppled, too. Just like the dominoesI sometimes played with my dad.
