PREFACE TO THE NEW EDITION
When this book was first published, in 1950, it was, I believe, the first and only book in which the Indian told in his own words about his way of life and his view of the white man. Those words are packed with the power and beauty of the Indian dreamhis religion, his hopes, his love of nature, his view of battle. Here he tells why he clashed with the whites in a series of bitter wars that he probably knew he could never win.
In today's terms the Indian was a conservationist. He rarely killed for sport, only for sustenance. He believed the white man to be a symbol of extinction and predicted that the day would come when the whites who slaughtered buffaloes, cut down trees, dammed and polluted rivers, and carved up the Great Spirit's land would see nature turn upon him and destroy him. Today those prophecies seem to be coming true.
This book is an indictment of the white man by the "savages" whom he betrayed and virtually destroyed. But it is an indictment tempered with warmth and wisdom and mercy. In the end one sees the hand of the Indian outstretched in friendship and brotherhood.
