Foreword of the Series Editors
The European Manual of Medicine (EMM) offers medical graduates and clinicians the current state-of-the-art knowledge based on the training book and logbook of clinical disciplines accepted by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS) in Brussels.
This VolumePhoniatrics Iof the EMM series provides phoniatric and ENT trainees, as well as members of related disciplines, with a comprehensive textbook. To ensure the best quality of patient care, the book is supported by electronic material as a necessary basis for training standards in Phoniatrics. Volume I includes the parts Voice Disorders and Disorders of Language and Hearing Development, following the training programme and logbook Medical Speech, Voice and Language Pathology, and Hearing and Swallowing Disorders of the UEMS Section Oto-Rhino-Laryngology. According to the phoniatric logbook, fundamentals concerning all mentioned communication disorders are presented in this volume.
Speech and Speech Fluency Disorders, Literacy Development Disorders, Acquired Motor Speech and Language Disorders and Dysphagia are parts of Volume II. Since Phoniatrics is an interdisciplinary specialty, both volumes may be of interest to members of related clinical disciplines, e.g. neurology and paediatrics.
In accordance with the principles of EMM, a standardised structure is used in addressing basics, special kinds of disorders, diagnosis/differential diagnosis, prevention and rehabilitation/prognosis. Case studies, colour photos, tables and supplementary audio and video samples, as well as detailed reference lists, provide a substantial amount of useful information to the reader.
Prof. Antoinette am Zehnhoff-Dinnesen, as editor-in-chief (Mnster, Germany), and the editors Prof. Boena Wiskirska-Wonica (Poznan, Poland) and Prof. Katrin Neumann (Bochum, Germany) have recruited interdisciplinary experts from different European countries and other continents to fulfil the demands of the book series. Supplementary electronic material, including audio and video samples, was collected and provided by the editor Prof. Tadeus Nawka (Berlin, Germany).
Special thanks go to Springer, especially to Sandra Lesny and Claus-Dieter Bachem, for their valuable help and assistance.
The Series Editors are extremely grateful for the work of the editors and the immense effort the editor-in-chief, Prof. Antoinette am Zehnhoff-Dinnesen, has shown in creating this comprehensive textbook, which is both timely and of extraordinary quality.
