Preface

Medical speech-language pathology continues to change. This edition of the book, our third, reflects these changes. In 1998, when the first edition was published, we were working together at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. Since then, we have both moved on. Barbara is now practicing at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and teaching in the Department of Hearing and Speech Sciences at the Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center. Alex has moved to Boston, where he is the Provost (Chief Academic Officer) at the MGH Institute of Health Professions, a graduate school for students in nursing, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, and physician assistant studies. In addition to a change in address, each of us has had some change in our approach and thinking about medical speech-language pathology.

With these changes in locale and setting, we continue to learn, to reflect, and to expand our concept. Some of the changes are reflected in this edition of the book. New chapters have been added on the important issue of education in medical speech-language pathology, differential diagnosis of adult language disorders, brain injury in children and adolescents, and end-of-life communication and swallowing issues. Each of these chapters brings new authors to the discussion and brings new viewpoints on important aspects of care. All of the continuing chapters have been updated with new concepts and references. Our goal is that these contributions will help to improve the care that the readers provide in their various practice settings.
