Foreword
In 1964 the Association for Library Service to Children of the American Library Association, recognizing the need for coordinating and planning for special collections in the area of literature for children, appointed a Committee on the National Planning for Special Collections of Children's Books. The title became Special Collections in Children's Literature to allow for collections in any format print, illustration, audiovisual materials, foreign translations, etc. Excluded were general browsing collections, private collections, parent-teacher collections, and those in instructional materials centers. Two hundred sixty-eight institutions were included in the second edition.
