The two books edited by Carolyn W. Field, Subject Collections in Children's Literature (R. R. Bowker, 1969) and Special Collections in Children's Literature (ALA, 1982) and the third edition edited by Dolores Jones, Special Collections in Children's Literature: An International Directory (ALA, 1995), have become standard texts on what special collections of children's literature exist, what areas or subjects they comprise, and where they are located.
Here the contributors add to that store of knowledge by sharing their expertise on why and how to preserve and conserve, how best to do it, and what resources exist to make doing it more efficient and more accessible to a spectrum of users. It would be difficult to think of any aspect of "why and how to establish and operate a special collection of children's literature" that these diligent and knowledgeable experts have not covered.
DianeJude L. McDowell's essay serves as an overview of special collections of children's materials, most often consisting of books but also including toys, comics, and audiovisual items. She defines the materials and the scope of such collections, giving many examples that range from those that are small and selective to such major collections of children's materials as the Lilly Library (400,000 volumes) or the International Youth Library in Munich.
