PREFACE
Once, when I was younger, gathering credits for school certification, I asked the professor (who was head of the English department at a prestigious public school) why there seemed to be a universal core of literature taught at specific grade levels that never seemed to change. I remarked that the literature taught was the same wherever I had lived, in Ohio, New York, New Jersey, and London. He acknowledged the truth of this and observed that it was true wherever schools were preparing students for American universities. He thought that the reasons for this phenomenon could be the demands of the universities and standardized tests, but it probably also had more to do with the customs in education. Teachers prepare lesson plans, schools buy classroom sets of certain books, publishers continue to reprint these books, and bibliographies continue to feature them. Therefore, a core of literature is self-perpetuating.
Now that few standardized tests presuppose knowledge of specific titles, there is greater freedom in the teaching of literature. There is evidence of increasing vitality and creativity in the choices used in that teaching of literature. The Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), has been instrumental in effecting this change by producing lists of new and challenging books that provide alternatives for educators to consider. Librarians, through personal contact with both educators and young adults, recommend and present new titles as well as the tried and true.

Compiling these lists has been a labor of love by dozens of members of YALSA who have willingly, conscientiously, passionately, and thoughtfully prepared them, always with the needs and interests of young adults in mind.
