Sam Bardaouil (PhD) is an art historian and curator whose research focuses on the international expression of modernism. He has taught at universities such as the American University of Beirut and the Tisch School of the Arts, New York University, and published in academic journals such as Dada/Surrealism , Qantara , and the International Journal of Humanities .
He is co-founder of Art Reoriented, a multidisciplinary curatorial platform based in Munich and New York. Among their many exhibitions, Art Reoriented curated the critically acclaimed Lebanese Pavilion at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013), the groundbreaking international exhibition Tea with Nefertiti (201214) and Art et Libert : Rupture, War and Surrealism in Egypt at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Dsseldorf and the Tate Liverpool (201618).
This is really a change of perspective that is absolutely helpful to understand more about Surrealism.
Dr. Doris Krystof, curator at Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dsseldorf, the New York Times (article on Art Reoriented and its research on Surrealism in Egypt)
Bardaouils theoretically rigorous research provides Surrealism with a wider context that is underpinned by global discourse. Destabilizing an important chapter on art history, his timely contribution is a profound addition to our understanding of modernism beyond the dominant narrative of post-colonial studies.
Dr. Nada Shabout, Professor of Art History, University of North Texas
