Introduction
Of course one book could never really be about everything, but we hope the Saskatchewan Book of Everything comes close to capturing the essence of Saskatchewan and its people. Saskatchewan is a fascinating province and we could have filled volumes. In fact, our most difficult task by far was determining what to exclude.
As a born and raised Saskatchewanian who has lived in the province for most of my life, this book has been a reminder of why I continue to call Saskatchewan home. The province is a fabulously diverse place with a rich and interesting history. We have a lot to be proud of here. Sure, Saskatchewan may be the easiest Canadian province to draw, but Saskatchewan is rich in natural resources and has beautiful and varied scenery, which includes over 100,000 lakes and rivers. We can claim many talents, such as Joni Mitchell, Leslie Nielsen and Gordie Howe, as our own. We are home to the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the RCMP and the First Nations University of Canada. Saskatchewan is definitely a great place to live.
This book was very much a team effort. John MacIntyre and Martha Walls of MacIntyre Purcell Publishing were instrumental in conjuring up the concept of, and then producing, this book. A team of writers, myself included, worked tirelessly, combing through written material and surfing the web to bring together this massive collection of facts and stories. Any errors and omissions are our own.
Id like to acknowledge and thank my fellow contributors, researchers and editors: Martha Walls, Silas Polkinghorne, Paul Spasoff, Erin Harde, Joan Cadham, Myrna Stark Leader, Carrie Anne MacIsaac, Lynn Maclntyre, Samantha Amara and Kelly Inglis.
The Saskatchewan Book of Everything team is richer for our newfound knowledge of Saskatchewan, and we hope our efforts will inform and entertain. We would like to extend a huge thank you to all those Saskatchewanians who shared their insight about the province for this book. The people here are, without a doubt, Saskatchewans greatest attribute.
Kelly-Anne Riess, for everyone who worked
