Author's Notes
One of the first things I learned as a cub reporter was the importance of making good notes. Without them, one is lost. I learned quickly that it pays to transcribe them as soon as possible after an interview. I also learned that it helps enormously if you save them. This memoir of our dear friend Georgia O'Keeffe is possible only because I saved every note, every article and every photograph of this marvelous personality. I realized early on in our friendship that I'd write a book about her someday and made certain my material survived several moves over a thirty-one-year period.
But any book requires much more than notes; it requires support, encouragement and advice. Fortunately, that was well provided by my wife, Claramy best criticand others. At the top of the list is my dear friend "O1"' Max Evans, the best writer I know, who always says it like it is. His suggestions were most worthwhile. Another old friend, Dan Thomasson, took time from running the Scripps Howard News Service to offer support and ideas. David Carlson, then at The Albuquerque Tribune, was helpful in the computer department. All have my gratitude.
A special word of thanks is reserved for Richard Friedman, my neighbor, who displayed incredible patience in guiding me through the intricacies of WordPerfect. He deserves some kind of medal.

Foreward Introducing the Reader to the Worlds of Ralph Looney and Georgia O'Keeffe
Author/editor Ralph Looney is a rarity. Humanity is made up of those few who contribute to our betterment and the vast majority who receive those gifts. Ralph Looney is clearly one of the former. When Ralph and O'Keeffe first shook hands, two sources of largesse met.
Looney, like O'Keeffe, has the dedication and skill to take on challenging subjects and see them to fruition. A fine example is his haunting series of articles, written in 1970, on the plight of the Navajo Indians. Long before Native American culture became popular, Ralph was putting his considerable talents and deep feelings for these people before the public. The Albuquerque Tribune series won him a Robert F. Kennedy Award for revealing so vividly the poverty of and discrimination against this valiant tribe. I feel certain that today he would be awarded a Pulitzer.
Another task Ralph took on with the same dedication was becoming a founding member of the New Mexico State Film Commission. He knew this environmentally clean, come-and-go industry would enormously benefit the relatively poor, colorful state of New Mexico both culturally and financially, and it would open doors for a great deal of untapped talent. As Albuquerque Tribune
