UNSUBJECTED
Used to smoke marijuana every day. Gets nervous in crowds.
Walked to the YMCA today, early. Liked the just-emptied-out feeling of the place. Prefers her own neighborhood to the rows of lace-curtained brown-stones near the Y. May want to live like that one day but can't see it now.
Called an old boyfriend. Hung up.
Likes these rainy days. Old, musty-smelling things. May have seen an old dress of hers on a mannequin in a second-hand shop, which would have to make it third-hand at least. Wanted a cigarette for just a minute there.
At the Y did so many laps it was hard to keep a count. Didn't count, in fact. Felt almost dizzy, even in the water.
Likes underwater invisibility best of all. Can get into a real dream state there, even at the YMCA.
Sat at her desk, head turned to the window, and lost track of the time. Nothing in the cupboard. A five-dollar bill in her purse. Contemplated registering for classes, signing up for another student loan.
Realized it was too late to swim again because of the after-work crowd at the Y.
Walked to the park. Dodged the skate boarders. Doesn't understand their haircuts or their clothing. Isn't that much older than they are.
Ate some dried apricots out of a sticky plastic bag, ignoring intent pigeons at her feet. Thought about going to a pay phone to call an old friend. Didn't do it
