The War and After
The Texas Folklore Society has shared in its modest way the fortunes and misfortunes of the book publishing industry. Booksall kinds of books, but especially those pertaining to American life, past and presenthave sold as never before. At the same time a scarcity of skilled labor and materials has made it impossible for publishers to meet schedules, much less to satisfy the demand.
This demand continues, nowhere more briskly than in Texas. One after another of the Society's publications has gone out of print. The time is ripe for an expansion of our publishing program. The Range Life Series should be continued and other ventures should be launched.
The Society has never tried to do more than break even financially. The membership dues and the proceeds from the sale of books for one year finance the publications of the next. But as costs of publications have risenthey are now the highest in the history of the Societyand as dues have remained the same, the revolving fund has become smaller.
We have the material to publish and we have customers waiting. We do not want to increase dues. We need more members.
