Preface to the Reprint Edition
The fifth volume of the Texas Folklore Society carried only the title of the series. It is now reprinted under a title of its own, RAINBOW IN THE MORNING. Added at the end is the first item published by the Society, a pamphlet by Will H. Thomas on Negro folksongs, which appeared in 1912.
This was the fourth book edited by J. Frank Dobie for the Society. His energy and enthusiasm were stimulating the collection and study of Texas lore. The first printing of Legends of Texas in 1924 was rapidly exhausted and a second and larger printing was run off. Readers in general, besides teachers and librarians, were becoming aware that Texas possessed an interesting and valuable folklore.
Dobie's article on the tournament as he knew it in Live Oak County gives information interesting equally to historians of folk festivals and biographers of Dobie. Mary Jourdan Atkinson has recorded many colorful sayings that are seldom heard today. This one calls up a vivid image in a devastating comparison: "I've seen wilder heifers than you milked in a gourd, ma'am." Gates Thomas, Will's brother, has some fine songs that he heard sung by Negro workers in the country around Winchester, where his father had a plantation. His version of the famous "Boll Weevil" song differs somewhat from that collected by Lomax in 1909. Douglas Branch, who had taken a course under Dobie at the University of Texas, is represented by an essay on buffalo lore; at this time
