Preface to the Reprint Edition
Every folklorist is aware of the interaction between historical events and popular imagination. Whether or not Travis actually drew the line at the Alamo and invited all who would die with him to cross over, this line, says J. Frank Dobie, "is a Grand Canyon cut into the bedrock of human emotions and heroical impulses." It is futile for historians to discount Zuber's account of Rose's story, for "what makes history, whether authenticated or legendary, live is that part of it that appeals to the imagination." And Dobie cared for what is living. He often said that an anecdote of doubtful historicity might reveal more about a man or a people than a bookful of facts.
Dobie had a lifelong interest in the roadrunner or paisano, which he had known since childhood. He made the paisano the emblem of the Texas Folklore Society and also his personal sign. His stationery carried the silhouette of a paisano, and there were carved and painted paisanos of wood and clay in his study. The long article on the paisano that appears in this book has been reprinted in ornithological journals. Dobie divides it into two parts, one for facts and the other for folklore. The popular belief that paisanos surround sleeping rattlesnakes with a corral of thorns increases our interest in the bird, whether or not it is true. It is not merely the facts, says Dobie, but the supposed facts that arouse interest.

Dobie; Mrs. Kupper's thesis on her sheepman uncle was later published by the University of Texas Press. Ruth Dodson was a ranch neighbor of Dobie's in the brush country; her collection of stories about the great Texas curandero Don Pedrito Jaramillo, in her translation from her own Spanish original, formed a large part of the Society's volume for 1951. The article by her on the preparation and cooking of tortillas makes a difficult subject perfectly clear.
IN THE SHADOW OF HISTORY contains too many good things to remain out of print any longer.
