How this Book Took Shape
When Mr. Mody C. Boatright, General Editor for the Texas Folklore Society, left for California to teach in the early part of the summer, he entrusted me with the editorship of our annual publication for 1951. He suggested that we limit contributions to Mexican materials.
Before leaving, Mr. Boatright turned over to me a study made by Miss Soledad Perez under his direction. Fortunately Miss Perez had planned to attend The University of Texas in the summer. With my advice she has prepared her manuscript for publication.
Mr. J. Frank Dobie was the means of my obtaining Miss Ruth Dodson's contribution. When I expressed an interest in Mexican folk medicine, he lent me her Spanish book on Don Pedrito Jaramillo. Translations of parts of this, I thought, would give value to our publication. In her reply to my inquiry, Miss Dodson informed me that she had already translated her book and made some additions to it besides. She sent me the manuscript and I decided to include most of her stories about the healer of Los Olmos.
Since our publication was to consist of Mexican lore, I prevailed upon Mr. Dobie, who has told many Mexican tales for English readers, to make a contribution. He had just finished his manuscript.on the mustang, but I gave him no rest until I had his essay in my hands.
My own two stories, collected some time ago in Jalisco, seemed to fit in with the other contributions.
Mr. Jos Cisneros of El Paso was kind enough to draw the illustrations for our book.
