FOREWORD

One of Dixies greatest gifts is being a brilliant communicator, especially on the topic of fashion and lifestyle photography. Many of Dixies creative speaking events are titled The Soul of Fashion Photography, and its those dynamic talks that have inspired this beautiful book.

Fashion and Lifestyle Photographyis a journey that shares images and captures the art, heart, passion, and, indeed, the soulof fashion.

Whether on the runways of New York, Milan, and Paris, or the covers of Vogueor Sports Illustrated, only genius photographers offer the ability to make fashion democratic. In an era of web-based obsession and declining magazine sales, the one art element in fashion that always fascinates is a compelling photograph. How do those images happen? Who are the inspired and inspiring authors of visual novels whose stories are told in the time length of a blink of an eye, and a single frame?

Dixie Dixon belongs in the pantheon of photographers of that overused word . . . iconic. In my fashion career, the people who captured imagesand made this then-insecure child-woman appear to be a credible cover model in the world of fashionincluded Francesco Scavullo, Herb Ritts, Bruce Weber, Richard Avedon, Peter Lindbergh, Tracey Morris, Jonathan Exley, Arthur Elgort, and Alberto Tolot. All photographers whose work is treasured and collected by those of us who love fashion.

The best auteurs create an indescribable, safe, intimate rapport with the person being photographed, while theyre actually performing their own amazing art. Dixie is one of the finest auteurs in the millennium. You will become a participant in each experience in Dixies beautiful, compelling book.

The experience with Dixie was completely individual and unique. Pure. Soulful. Emotional. Brilliant. Beautiful. We laughed . . . we cried . . . We became sisters in the art form. We made, with the support of a glorious teamincluding my forever Global Creative Director, Jon Carrascoimages that matter.

Something wonderful happened during each shoot in this book. The soul of fashion, when captured in a photoshoot, is the responsibility of the photographer. I am unaware of a photographer who has greater gifts than Dixie Dixon and her gleaming Nikon cameras.

The day we worked together, Dixie was inspired by Bert Sterns Marilyn Monroes, George Hurrells Greta Garbos, and a beloved member of my family, Elizabeth Taylor, whoas the most photographed woman of the twentieth centurymade far too many photographers famous to credit one.

The secret lesson to Fashion and Lifestyle Photography, is that we, the viewers and readers, must realize that when the person behind the camera is Dixie Dixon, she is more than an equal part of the images soul and beauty. May this very special book arrive into the world and be received with the same love that the miraculous Dixie imbues to all, whenever she steps behind her Nikon.

INTRODUCTION
A NOTE TO READERS

Photography is one big insane adventure, and in writing this book, it is my goal to say to anyone who has the dream of being a commercial photographer, or any kind of photographer for that matteryou can do this!

I began with only the dream in mind; I had no connections, no experience, and no idea how I was going to make this dream happenit has all primarily been trial and error. The truth is, there is no set path to success in photographythat fact alone should liberate you.
