I have always

believed that in my

professional life,

Im the master of

my destiny. Drawing,

designing, visual

thinkingall these

skills are learnable,

and willpower paired

with persistence can

make up for a lack

of talent.

But slowly Ive come to realize

that there may be some core that

I cant mold. This core is where my

grand artistic ideals collide with the

limitations of my skill, the inherent

insecurity of performing in front

of an audience, and the element of

chance in the creative process.

While I consciously

obsess over the

smallest details

of the project

in front of me,

the larger

aspects of my

work life remain

ignored. It feels

like swimming,

concentrating

on strokes and

turns, while all

the water and

splashing obscure

my surroundings.

After a while I peek

my head out and

wonder:

Whoaahh!

Where am I?

Where

did I come

from?

Where am

I going?

I grew up and studied in

southwestern Germany.

After getting my degree, I knew

I couldnt stay there.

No matter where youre from, at a

certain point in your life, you just

have to leave.

So I went to

New York City.

And I

absolutely

loved it.

There were more than enough tough

moments: Some disturbing, most

of them conventional, and a few

memorable, including coming back

from an extremely unpleasant ten

days in the hospital, only to find that

my roommates dog had eaten my

portfolio.

But soon I was working for

all the clients that I had

only known from design

books, so I decided to stay.

I met my wonderful wife

there. We got married,

had kids,
