ROBERT AMOS is an artist and writer living in Victoria, BC. A graduate of York University in Toronto, he discovered Hughes while working at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria as Assistant to the Director (19751980). From 1986 to 2018, Amos was the art writer for the Times Colonist and has published eight books of his painting and writing about Victoria. His book Inside Chinatown (with Kileasa Wong, TouchWood Editions, 2009) received the Award of Excellence from the BC Heritage Foundation. The recent volume E. J. Hughes Paints Vancouver Island (2018) was shortlisted for the Bill Duthie Booksellers Choice Award in 2019.
As a painter, Amos was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts in 1996, and his paintings are in the collections of the City of Victoria, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, and the University of Victoria, among many others. He was named an Honorary Citizen of Victoria in 1987. Amos is creating the Catalogue Raisonne of the art works of E. J. Hughes.
