For my gorgeous brother, Stuart Cardy
1970-97
Foreword
It was an absolute privilege to be asked to select the images for this collection of
photographs of gorgeous guys. There are already a good number of books dedicated
to the male nude, but this is unique in that it is aimed primarily at heterosexual women
rather than gay men. It would have been too easy to have compiled a selection of typical
body-builder or calendar-boy images. Beautiful as these are, such a collection would have
been only a limited representation of the male form.
Each of us has his or her own idea of what we find attractive in a man. While it may be
generally acknowledged that the more mathematically symmetrical a mans features are,
both facially and bodily, the more attractive he becomes as a mate, attractiveness isnt just
about handsomeness and symmetry; it also has to do with how a man engages us, and
draws us to him with his aura or attitude. While the majority of the men in this collection
are arguably among the most physically attractive of our species, this was not the main
criterion for selection. Self-confidence and ego cannot be overrated in a mans allure.
All the men in these photographs are strong and proud.
Whilst some of the images may be explicit, none of them is threatening and there are
very few that are likely to be found shocking, with the possible exception of Doralba
Picernos heavily pierced and tattooed models. You may even find yourself spending
more time looking at the detail in these images than at those of men who are classically
good-looking. I confess, though, that James Staffords photograph of a man on his knees
in a pink room makes me wince a little, too.
I admire the sense of humour in Britt Marie Trensmars flower work and in Michele
Martinolis photograph of a disco-ball-encrusted penis. Take a second look at Katrine
