636.1'089dc22 2008024700 PREFACE One may ask what, in an era of widespread electronic availability of information, is the use of another textbook of equine medicine? The answer lies within the pages of this book in the form of a wealth of high-quality information presented in a compact format by topic experts.
The result is a readily sourced body of information that does not need to boot up, never has a blue screen failure, and does not have a battery to go flat. Moreover, the book is readily browsed, allowing the reader to explore and find relevant information rapidly. The purpose of this book is not to provide a detailed description of diseases of horses but rather to present a synopsis of the salient aspects of the important and common diseases with an emphasis on diagnosis and treatment. As such, this book, while useful for students, is intended for readers with a sound understanding of veterinary medicine who require a brief reminder of important aspects of disease. This second edition of Blackwells Five-Minute Veterinary Consult: Equine is built on the imposing body of work done on the first edition, supervised by Chris Brown and Joe Bertone. The quality of this second edition of the book is dependent on the hard work, knowledge, and attention to detail of the section editors and authors.
The strength of this book is a tribute to their talents, whereas blame for any weaknesses can be laid at our feet. J. P. Lavoie
